OMRSCCA & STLSCCA RallyCross # 1
Sunday, April 13, 2014
Privett Farm near Salem, MO [Map]

SCCA RallyCross is back in the land of the 100 Acre Wood Rally. Ozark Mountain Region and St. Louis Region Sports Car Club of America are coming together to bring unpaved competition to the masses outside Salem, Missouri. Rally fans may recognize the venue as the valley next to 100AW spectator area "E." If you enjoyed the action from the sidelines, now is your chance to try your own rally skills in a controlled, low cost environment.

1. About
What is RallyCross?
RallyCross is a performance driving contest against the clock where competitors attempt to set their best time in an agility course marked by traffic cones in a large field. Unlike stage rally, there are no jumps or ditches, and roll cages are not required. Drivers preview the course by walking it or going on a low-speed lead-and-follow lap, rather than following the pace notes of a navigator. Competitors have the opportunity to make a set quantity of runs with all times combined for a total score.

Events are similar to our "Solo" autocross program, but on dirt. The emphasis on accessibility, safety, affordability, and fun is the same. Cars are grouped in classes based on capability and level of modification, and both regular street cars and stage rally cars are allowed to participate.

What kind of car do I need?
No special rally car is needed. Any fixed-roof vehicle passing a basic safety inspection is fine, so your daily-driven sedan on street tires is perfect for Rallycross. Review the RallyCross technical inspection requirements here. For safety reasons, rollover-prone vehicles such as SUVs, 4x4's, and many full-sized trucks will not be allowed to compete. If you have any questions about the eligibility of your vehicle, please ask an event Safety Steward here.

From the SCCA RallyCross rules:
A RallyCross event is open to any fixed-roof production based vehicle (including convertibles with a factory hardtop attached, targa types with factory panel in place, or T-tops with factory panels in place) that can pass a basic safety inspection. The event organizer has the duty to exclude any vehicle that presents a safety hazard.

2. Requirements
Entry fee
  • SCCA Members $30, but any SCCA member who pre-registers on this site will receive a $5 discount
  • Non-SCCA members $40, which includes a SCCA Weekend Membership and discount voucher for SCCA annual membership
Entry requirements
1. Valid Driver's license or learner's permit with stipulations as follows. Anyone under age 18 on the site, participant or otherwise, must have their parents/guardians sign a SCCA minor waiver on site, or in the presence of an OMR Solo/Rally committee member, board member, or notary public. Competitors under 18 years of age must be able to show that they have permission to operate the vehicle in the event. Any driver who has the legal authority (license or permit) to operate an automobile with restrictions on a public road may compete as long as the restrictions of the driving license or permit are met. If those restrictions require a passenger, that person must be either the driver’s parent/legal guardian or an approved instructor. That instructor must be approved by both the Event Chairman and the event Safety Steward on a case-by-case basis. Parents/guardians must furnish written permission for said instructor on-site.

2. Safe vehicle per technical inspection guidelines.

3. Must wear an approved helmet during competition. We have a limited number of loaner helmets available. If you bring your own, it must meet one of the standards below (DOT rating alone is not sufficient).
All helmets meeting the latest or two immediately preceding Snell Foundation standards (SA2010, SAH2010, SA2005, SA2000, M2010, M2005, M2000, K2010, K2005, K98), SFI standards 31.1, 41.1, 31.1A, 31.2A, 41.1A, 41.2A or British spec BS6658-85 type A/FR are acceptable.
Work/Run
There will be two heats. Like Solo/autocross, RallyCross is a self-worked, volunteer-run sport in which competitors have a work heat opposite their run heat. Prepare to be outdoors all day, and dress and prepare accordingly. Bring a second pair of shoes if muddy.

3. Location
Privett Farm
2753 County Road 5380, Salem, MO

Directions from Salem, MO
From the intersection of highways 19 and 32 in town, go South on Highway 19 for 4.5 miles, then turn left to go East on Missouri-B for 8.4 miles. Turn right to go South on County Road 5380, and travel a couple of miles. The entrance to the field will be on your right. Reference the satellite view in Google Maps for additional guidance.

4. Cars & Information
Classing
RallyCross has a simple classing structure.
  • Rally Stock - FWD (SF), RWD (SR), and AWD (SA) - upgrades are limited to items such as cat-back exhaust, brake pads, clutch and pressure plate, and wheels and DOT-legal tires that are near stock dimensions.
  • Rally Prepared - FWD (PF), RWD (PR), and AWD (PA) - adds specific allowances for upgraded intake, exhaust, suspension, differential, wheels, etc.
  • Rally Modified - FWD (MF), RWD (MR), and AWD (MA) - almost any production car or logbooked racecar is allowed, with drivetrain and suspension being unrestricted.
Recommended
  • Sunscreen, hats, non-alcoholic drinks, poncho, etc. - be ready for all weather.
  • Sturdy closed-toed shoes, bug repellant - you will be on a field for walking and working course
  • Tires inflated to max PSI - it is uncommon for tires to break from the bead of the rim, but inflate street tires as a precaution.
  • Spare tire - tire damage is not anticipated, but we will be running on dirt. Make sure to bring a spare.
  • Window cleaner - be prepared for a dusty environment
  • Numbers and class letters - magnetic or vinyl letters are preferred, but tape in a contrasting color is acceptable. Cars must be clearly marked on each side so that corner workers may read them from their stations.

So I shared this event on the "In the Pits" racing forums when I noticed the banner says the 13th but the text says the 14th. Which one is it? :?

I think the one place in the original post is the only place it was incorrect. Now fixed to show 4/13/2014.

Any OMRSCCA regulars interested in coming?

We have 19 entrants pre-registered as of this morning, and I'm the only one from OMR. At this OMR event.

I booked a double bed at the Walnut Motel in Salem if anyone wants to split costs and avoid an early morning on Sunday. I've stayed there during a few 100AW's, and it's cheap/basic, but clean.

I wish I could go, but I can't make it. I think I've been in motels more than home the last couple months.

Thanks, Matt.

We had 47 entrants at this event, which is probably the largest RallyCross turnout ever held under an OMR sanction. We had 37 people at our first RallyCross (of the current era) held back in 2010.

This was a trial of sorts to see what would happen when two regions host an event remote from either of their core populations, but near a community with a rally fan base. The result was pretty good. A small contingent from each region, the stage rally community, and the local rally fans combined to make for a good mix of drivers. We had everything from 70s Chevy muscle to caged stage rally cars.

Here's a link to some pictures:
https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set ... 80cefd41f5

This may not be a sustainable event model for a monthly affair, but I could see us doing this at least once a year. The local population is small, but energetic about motorsports from years of RallyAmerica (formerly SCCA ProRally) activity in the Salem/Potosi region. A healthy, colorful turnout of vehicles builds a lot of enthusiasm for all parties involved.

We had wind and spotty light rain during the afternoon, but things went fairly well after some delays during our first set of runs. I took away some minor learnings to employ for any future events of this type. We didn't have awards for anyone, and the results weren't ready to announce on-site. The number of walk-ups and weekend memberships caught me off guard, as well. Syncing online registration from one region with the timing software of another region could have been streamlined. Honestly, it would have been easier for someone to bring a whole regional T&S trailer, too. An ez-up tent and a folding table didn't cut it with spitting horizontal rain.

Good event overall, though. We'll have to try this again some time and make it even better.
