Sunday's Auto-X

Another challenging course by Jim. Also frustrating, exhilarating, and head-scratching. In hindsight, I found it to be surprisingly technical, although if you had asked me to describe it yesterday after the event I would have just been muddled. Perhaps the heat had drained all the neurotransmitters ...

Paul,

Glad you and the other guys came out. Yup, there is definitely a learning curve to this stuff, but I know it will get better. It was also great to see all those Mustangs. I'll order up some cooler weather for the events to come.

SSS

Hey Guys,

I just received my Solo Safety Steward license so I will volunteer to be one of the SSS. I would prefer to work the first heat and run the second.

numbers

Easy solution for the time being. Just bring some kind of tape that will show up on the side of your car, and you can create whatever number and class disignation you need for this event. Then for next event you will know what you need. Some other people just use tape every time. The important thing...

Miata

Jim,

That's neat! Congratulations. Mark R. just bought one (a '97) too, although I don't think it will be his autocrosser.

alignment

Yes, do sit in it when you have it aligned. I've done that many times. On a macpherson strut car it can make 1/2 degree camber difference, which you will notice particularly on right-hand turns, because you will not have enough camber. The alignment guys will look at you funny but I've never had one...

Auto-X vs drags

Paul, Yup, that was my orange Mach 1 you saw. I started out in drag racing too, and it still has a certain appeal to me. However, once I started autocrossing I learned how much more important the driver is to how fast you go. You have to have a good car with good tires too, but the driver is certain...

Welcome

Howdy, I just now saw your post. Always nice to have another Mustang guy around. I've autocrossed four of them over a period of time. First was a '67 GT that I got thoroughly embarrassed in. Only autocrossed it once, and that was years ago. Then I owned a '66 GT350 for a long time and I autocrossed ...

Well, I'm not real sure I can shed any light on this discussion as I've never tried to set up a street prepared car. I have always been challenged enough to try to get a stock class car right. I have talked to Sam Strano and I agree that he has a lot of good insights into what makes a car fast. And ...

Last Auto-X

Hi All, What an interesting autocross we had last Sunday. First heat was kind of like staging an event on a public road, which was where I cut my teeth in competition with my '58 Ford with 4.11s and......er...I think I'll save that story for when someone wants to hear it over a tall cold one. First ...

That is hilarious. When I took driver's training in 9th grade, the car I used actually had a passenger side brake pedal. As I remember, it was only used once when I missed a stop sign. Good thing your car doesn't have one. Good thing my car doesn't either because my wife would use it from time to ti...

Thanks, but those 4:30 wakeups are brutal. Besides, I've driven on lots of good courses at Ducks. Maybe there are others that have never done a course that would like to try their hand. Eh?

Last event

Hey Guys, I've been busy this past week and am just now getting a chance to post something about the last event. I thought it was a really good event, and thanks to all of you that helped bring it about. We (Mark and I) forgot about setting up corner stations. In the past I think someone else did th...

PAX Showdown

Sounds interesting. Back in the dark ages we did that a couple of times when we had an event here in Pittsburg. The way we did it was to complete all the class runs so that year-end points for class champions and for year-end PAX champion would not be messed up, and then held a PAX Shootout at the e...
