thanks for putting this together Scott. It's always fun to watch...

I've been looking at the numbers for the top 4 to see how it might "play out"....

Kent seems to be in a pretty firm lead and is the only one in the top four that can really afford to "drop" anymore events. His consistant top 10 results paying off big time. For example, If Mark, Bud or myself have to drop one of the remaining events because we miss the event or rain takes us out or mechanical failure, then we will have to count a 9th or 10th place result. That's hard to make up. And it gets real ugly if one of us has to drop 2 events... OTOH, Kent will have to count a 4th if he has a missed/bad event, and then a 7th if he has 2 bad events. That's still pretty good. So a bad day doesn't hurt Kent too much. So a snow day may lock it in for him... Matt and I missing the double header in May so we could race at the Iowa speedway is really starting to "sting" about now... but it was worth it!!!

But, it's not going to be a cake wake for Kent... Let's say the last three events are good solid events and the top four points holders have all solid finishes... you know, sunny and 80 degrees, no mechanicals, and no weddings/funerals/or road races... Call it heads up from hear on out. Well, it's pretty much a dead heat if you look at the top 4 finishes (assuming the next 3 are "keepers") Bud actually has a small edge... followed by mark, me and kent. See how fast that happened? But, there are alot of "assumptions" in there... things have to fall just right...

I was pretty sure I was not in this race (and I'm still a long shot), but with some luck I may just hang in enough to keep them honest. With a couple recent wins, I was lucky enough to have non-OMR members place second right behind me each time... taking valuable points away from others...

And that's the wild card this year! OMR is super deep talent wise. It's not going to be those 4 in the top 4 spots. Don, Charlie (already has a win), Brad, Scott, Judah, Opie, Wendell, Paul, Jason, Martin (just wait and see), Mark Hill, and any of those ES yahoos are going to jump in and take the points they deserve.

We have had some exciting finishes in years past and I hope we have another one this year. I remember inviting some fast guys to the last event of the year a few years ago when I needed a win and Mark F to finish 4th at the last event of the year... It worked! what an upset.

THen there was the year Bud had a spoiler and he won!

Then the year Mark F won while he was on vacation! Down to me, opie and mark. Mark goes on vacation with a tiny lead. Me and Opie right there. If either of us could win the last event, it would be ours! Then Mark Hill rolls in fresh off nationals, fresh (still warm) tires and all. He thumps us all and Mark F wins it!

I hope 2018 comes down to the end in a good, honest, fair fight where the winner takes it by 1 point and 0.005 seconds.

With Mark and Bud out driving me this last event, it's only getting closer and will be decided by the next two events.

Bud, can I take you up on that learning how to go faster offer?

Not proofread yet, but should be right...

Name total Best 7 rank # events w/points
Mark Foley 80 78 1 8
Bud Weeks 68 68 2 7
Kent Willer 71 66 3 9
Sam Henry 61 61 4 7
Jason Mulkey 33 33 5 6
Charlie Holt 32 32 6 7
Brad Holliday 30 30 7 4
Don Wilson 25 25 8 6
Jim Rowland 21 21 9t 5
Opie Viets 21 21 9t 4
Stan Bell 15 15 11 3
Gregg McNabb 5 5 12 1
Justin Andrews 3 3 13t 1
Matt Longpine 3 3 13t 1
Scott Woosley 3 3 13t 1

lowest finishing positions currently still included in the best of 7

Mark 8
Bud 9
Kent 7
Sam 10
Charlie 10

This 10th event really shook things up at the top.

Also note: Judah (41 points) renewed his membership, but he missed a long enough period of time that I better talk to the rest of the board about how best to handle it, as the supps are vague on this. Conveniently, there's a board meeting tomorrow night. :-)

So here's my take on the numbers... FWIW

In Scott's post, you'll notice the top 5 drivers all still have a low (bad) finish that will probably drop off after the next event...
So Let's take a look at the top 6 finishes as I believe we are counting 7 this year...
Mark 75
Bud 66
Kent 62
Sam 60

So Charlie and I are out... We are down 15 or more points... Technically, I could "tie" mark if I won and he finished 11+, but then he still wins the tiebreaker rule and that assumes Bud is way down too. The wildcard (spoilers) I mentioned in previous post got me back in the game and it took me back out. On the event 9 (foley course), mark, bud, kent took the top 3 and I was down in 6th. Other fast guys jumped up and took the points. I didn't have any other solid finishes to count, so out of the battle I fall. I can only be a spoiler now...

This puts Mark in good position. He won both events since my last breakdown, and even managed to gap bud and kent a little extra due to spoilers: Jason, Sam, Jim, and Brad at the last event. Mark is sitting on 3 wins and 3 thirds which is pretty solid. More wins than anyone else. More podiums than anyone else. 4 podiums for Mark in the last 4 events is pretty fast.

Bud and Kent can still win, but it will take an upset for sure. Bud will need to beat Mark by about 10 points... So If Bud wins, Mark has to finish 6 or worse. Bud 2nd and Mark has to finish 9 or worse. and if Bud is third, Mark has to be out of the top 10... Kent needs to win and have low finishes from Mark and Bud. Possible, but unlikely as weather or course design are unlikely to hurt both of them.

We have had plenty of upsets at the last event of the year. Even Mark has blown a decent lead. If Bud or Kent pull this off, it will be the biggest upset I can recall. The good news is that we do have enough spoilers to make this happen, but what an upset it would be... Feeling any pressure Mark?
