Cold Air Intake

Post by CivicSiguy » Mon Mar 24, 2008 8:24 pm

I was looking at the intake on my car, and noticed it was "piped" into the front bumper. I did some research and found that my car comes stock with a cold air intake (http://automobiles.honda.com/civic-si-c ... ture=K20Z3).

My question is, if I get an aftermarket cold air intake, will that still throw me out of stock class?

Also, since the Civic Si Mugen is classed in GS, if I buy the suspension kit from the dealer and have them install it would I still stay in GS??? It's the same car and same trim level just with some over-priced nifty items :D

Yes it will bump you out of Stock because it is not stock just as it would if you change air boxes with another model to get better airflow. The rules only allow for the element to be replaced or removed, no more.

There was even questionable mods happening whe the Toyota guys found they could unhook teh air temp sensor at teh track and get a bit more fuel then hook it back up on teh way home. Techinically, I would rule that as illegal since you are modifying the fuel calibrations.

To remain in a stock class you must completely change the package. Like the Civic Si on my era (92-95), if I wanted to run Si gear I would have had to switch every thing including installing a sunroof since that was stock in teh Si Civic.

Plus the SCCA is USDM only. No models that are not readily sold in the US are permitted.

Of course I may be mistaken on some or all of these comments so look for someone better to answer your questions.

So if I change out my stock cold air intake with a brand name one it will put me in STX class? I thought that you could change out factory parts as long as the new ones are the same as stock (e.g. I changed my stock wheels with high-performance wheels with same offset and size 18X7.5).

I would like to get a definitive answer on this before I spend $300 on a AEM cold air intake. The AEM brand is the same length, and diameter size as the stock one. It is just stainless steel instead of resin. Also, it has a cone filter instead of a....weird filter lol

Yes it will bump you to a Street Touring class, not necessarily STX because STX is an open class. I would say STS.

As long as the wheels are the same offset, diameter and width as the factory wheels on your model car then it is Stock legal. For an example, there was a HS car (Ford Escort ZX2) that showed with 15x6.5" wheels unfortunately the ZX2 came out with 15X5" rims and the issue was pressed and upheld.
