2010 Solo helmet standards

Post by JimR » Thu Oct 22, 2009 2:04 pm

EDIT: M95 will remain legal for 2010.

The November 2009 FasTrack is out, and contains a lot of proposals for the 2010 Solo rules.

http://www.scca.com/documents/Fastrack/ ... ck-nov.pdf

One everyone should note: the Snell 2010 helmet standard is being released and will render the Snell 1995 standard obsolete for Solo2. The Solo Events Board recommendeds the following rule change:
ITEM 8 ) Change the first sentence of 4.3.1 to read: "Helmets meeting one of the following standards must be worn while on course: Snell 2010, 2005, or 2000 (SA, K, or M); SFI standards 31.1, 31.1A, 31.2A, 41.1, 41.1A, or 41.2A; British spec BS6658-85 Type A/FR."
In other words, Snell M95 will be gone next year, and only Snell 2000 or newer will be legal. Expect this rule change to go into effect for 2010 autocross events, and shop/budget accordingly over Winter if you have a M95 helmet.

Due to certification staggering, it looks like SA95 will remain legal for another year.

The Snell sticker example shown on the Event Information page is from my helmet, so it looks like I'll be upgrading!

Clarification: due to the Snell certification process, SA95 remains legal for another year. Only M95 will be obsolete.

Since the Snell certification process will prevent the 2010 helmets from reaching the market until next Spring, the newest you can buy is a 2005 standard.

Kind of leaves you SOL if you have a M95 and want something that will remain legal for the maximum amount of time.

Reminder: per the December 2009 FasTrack, the helmet rules mentioned above went into effect on 1/1/2010.

Helmets meeting one of the following standards are required for Solo2:
- Snell SA2010, K2010, M2010, SA2005, K2005, M2005, SA2000, K2000, M2000, SA95, K98
- SFI 31.1, SFI 31.1A, SFI 31.2A, SFI 41.1, SFI
41.1A, SFI 41.2A
- BSI BS6658-85 Type A/FR.

In cliffnotes form, that means M95 helmets have expired, and SA95 helmets are good for one more year.

Safe Racer would be a great place to by a helmet.

I also wanted to mention that because of pending rule changes at ours and other organizations, vendors have begun closing out SA2005 helmets on ebay. Keeping in mind it will only be certified and allowed for 5 or 6 years, you can get a closeout Bell or other quality helment now for less than 1/2 of what they brought just 6 months ago.

Also an M helment will not work if you have any road race aspirations in the future although is fine for SOLO

Not positive but I believe the only difference in these and the M helmets is that they have a flame resistant Nomex liner (and are more expensive)

You would be correct Curtis in saying the only difference between the M and SA ratted helmets is in the lining of the helmet.

ARRRRRG.

http://scca.com/documents/Fastrack/10/1 ... ck-jan.pdf

Per the January FasTrack, M95 will be legal for 2010 after all.
Comment: After receiving member comments, the Snell Helmet Safety Standards were re-examined with a follow-up e-mail to the Snell Memorial Foundation. Because of changes in helmet testing, Snell will have two concurrent motorcycle helmet standards in effect – M2010 helmets are available now and also M2005 helmets will continue to be certified through June 30, 2011. (This is the same ending date for certification testing of SA2005 and K2005 helmets.) Basically, Snell will have an unusual situation in 2010 – two current motorcycle helmet standards at the same time.
Good thing I just bought a new helmet to replace my M95. :x

I still plan on buying a new helmet this year but now at least I won't feel so rushed to get it before a good selection of the 2010 year helmets are available. This will ensure that I get the longest life possible out of the new brain bucket.

Also if you are ok with a motorcycle rated helmet, and live around the Springfield area, then you might check with Gene's Gallery on E Chestnut Expressway. It is owned by an OMR member and I understand that they have great prices.
