XP Class?

Post by Why T » Mon Oct 27, 2008 10:58 pm

I am definitely new to the SCCA scene and will be joining you all next year. I will be driving a 2000 MR2 Spyder with a Motor swap. I know that this alone puts me into SM2, which I'm cool with because I want to race for fun and don't really care what class I'm in.

I also have full underbody bracing. It looks like a web of aluminum tubing under my car. And have heard that this plus the swap will put me into XP class. But looking through the results I see that nobody ran XP this year.

So my question is, Do you guys run anyone in XP? or would you just leave me in SM2?

It is kinda odd cause I don't really care, I just want to know.

Thanks.

I don't know if everyone else would agree with that, reference this thread from earlier this year http://www.omrscca.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=774. It seems like a precedent was kind of set. I am assuming that you have already been looking at the rule book http://www.scca.com/documents/Solo%20Ru ... ules_2.pdf and that your web-like underbody brace probably does not conform to 15.2.E which spells out Subframe Connector specifications for SM cars. I will agree with you that this one modification probably doesn't make your car better than all SM2 cars, but rules are rules for a reason. Even if we all agree that something like this probably wouldn't matter, allowing one person to not comply seems like would only cause others to want exceptions made for them.

If you would like to run in SM2, to be going head to head with others, would it be that big of a deal to pull out the bracing? I know that as I do a better job of prepping my car for its class that I'm going to have to discard some new parts that I just put on before this season because I was originally going to leave mine in HS. While it sucks to throw away good parts I am realizing this is how it goes.

As for running in a class alone, it is fairly common. We have a PAX index which uses a multiplier to compare your time to all other classes, taking the car somewhat out of the equation. You would then be able to see how you compare overall for the day.

I would also like to thank you for taking the initiative to look at the rules and ask this kind of question here. These forums are a much better place to discuss this rather than waiting until you get to the registration trailer when you show up at your first event.

The motor is the 2zz-ge from the Lotus Elise.

As for Silver Yota, I perfectly agree with you and thank you for the links. I guess my question was where would you guys put me. I agree that the bracing really doesn't make my car that much better than everyone else in SM2, even though if you added my driving skill I could probably race stock class, but I was just wondering if you guys would just go ahead and leave me there for competition sake or if I would just become the default winner every month. :D YEAH FOR ME! :D

And yes it is a big deal to take off the bracing. Like I said before, I really don't care what class I land in. I built this car for my enjoyment and would like to autocross just for fun. So no it won't come off because then I would have to figure out which pieces can stay and which can go. (There are 9 total braces).

Thanks for the help guys.

If it was me I would just go in XP since that were the rules say..... but then just compete for a good overall time for the day.... really thats all I do... Ive been the only one in my class for a while now and just go for a good overall time...

XP will probably have a horrible PAX #.... but, I dig Raw time over PAX anyday... :)

X/p class

Post by 4wdrift » Wed Nov 26, 2008 8:26 pm

I will be running X/P in 09, and there is one other B/P car that will probably run X/P so we can make a class of it. Don't undo what you have done for performance and fun, Just enjoy it and go after ftd.

I wanted to run XP, but Frank is too light so ended in EM.

You might check weight min' and displacement penetlies. ALthough you will probably be fine, since you are going with a smaller motor.
