The wheel horsepower didn't impress me at first glance, either. A competitive SM2 FD RX-7 has at least double, and a stock C5 Z06 has a little over 400hp to begin with - he mentions them both.
It doesn't look very amateurish, though. Forced induction on a Miata engine could have gotten him there just as easily, so I'm guessing there's a method to his madness. Torque area, response, or some edge. The V6 in the 626 and Probe GT was always looking for a chassis like that.
