Protecting event results?

Post by JimR » Tue Jan 15, 2008 6:35 pm

Autocrosses are not racing events, but "driver education" events for insurance purposes. Most people haven't had much trouble, but I've seen a rash of manufacturers like Mitsubishi and insurers like Geico combing or mining Solo event results for the purpose of denying warranties and coverage. Here are a couple of recent examples:

Insurance coverage dropped by Geico

Drivetrain warranty dropped by Mini/BMW

Most autocrossers are driving a registered, insured street car at our events. Right now we've been making full names and full make and model information available online. Is this a good idea anymore?

I don't know what programming or technology we have at our disposal to keep legit competitors informed about results online (a big deal to many people) while keeping out prying corporate eyes. I thought I'd bring this up while we're developing a new web site. Would it be better to use initials for first or last names, and only show the make?

we could do first name last initial. and just put a simple make. or we would password protect the results. you sign up for forum access and you have results access type of thing
There's no place like 127.0.0.1
